The Kind of People We Are

A few years back, we heard an excellent speaker talk on the family. He spoke about the importance of knowing who you are as a family - your traditions, your values, your history. He said it was important to share this with your children, so they would have a complete sense of belonging to a distinct, unique family.

So, that got us to thinking, "What defines us as a family? Just what kind of people are we?"

  • We're the kind of people who eat in the car. A lot.
  • We're the kind of people who, when they can't pass the ketchup packet all the way to the back of the minivan, will just go ahead and throw it at their children.
  • We're the kind of family where the children thank us when the laundry is done. "Wow, I have clean underwear! THANKS Mom & Dad!"
  • We're the kind of family who makes chocolate chip cookies at 11:30 at night just because we feel like it.
  • We're the kind of people who are always trying to make schedules and use organizers.
  • We're the kind of people who end up blissfully ignoring the schedule and having a much better time.
  • We're the kind of people who let their children's toys & books take up 97.3% of the house.
  • We're the kind of people who would actually calculate how much space their children's toys and books take up.
  • We're the kind of family that loves to tell stories. Have you ever heard the one about my mom, the canary, and the vacuum cleaner? It's a beauty.
  • We're the kind of people who see a lizard outside and catch it on a whim. It's supposed to be just to show the kids, but next thing we know, we have a cage, logs, plants, 2 more lizards, and are making weekly trips to buy crickets. And now we're actually dusting the crickets with nutritional supplements to ensure a balanced lizard diet. Next month, we're buying a bigger cage and a bearded dragon. Next year we're planning on getting a chameleon & learning how to raise our own crickets. All I did was catch a lizard, and now I'm a cricket duster. How do these things happen?
  • We're the kind of family that loves each other deeply and tells each other often.

God is so awesome to make not only every person as an individual unlike any other, but also to make each family completely unique, too. Thank God today for your family, with all its quirks, as His special gift to you.
